    Description

The Chinese Calendar series presents a new animal every year.

    2022: year of the tiger

The tiger is the third sign of the zodiac, and an earth sign. It is considered as brave, fighting and powerful but also cruel, vindictive and terrifying. The Tiger symbolises power and solitude. In the past, people often compared emperors and high dignitaries to this animal. Surrounded by plum blossom, a symbol much used in Chinese history and art, and lanterns, The Tiger is depicted in a childlike manner. The ideogram of the tiger appearson the left side of his representation. The yeardate and the inscription 'Year of the Tiger'appear at the top of the coin.

On the reverse side, all the animals of the Chinese zodiac are drawn in achildlike way around the Ying and Yang symbol. From 2018 to 2029 there is acomplete cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Each of these twelve years features ananimal from this calendar. The face value is visible in the center of the coinas well as the symbol "RF".

    The Collection

Our collection of Smurfs gold and silver coins comes with a collection of coloured medals and mini medals. Produced at only 20,000 copies, the Smurf's mini medals are truly rare and desired collector's items.

Translating comic book characters is an interesting but perilous mission. The transition from comic strip to volume must faithfully transcribe the clear line of Peyo's work. These coins and medals are the faithful representation of a graphic line proper to the Franco-Belgian artist, it is a tribute in three dimensions paid by the craftsmen of Monnaie de Paris to the universe of the Smurfs.

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
