    Description

For more than 40 years, the UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) lists the sites that are part of the “world heritage cultural property sites”. Since 2007, Monnaie de Paris honours various monuments included in this list in a series of collector coins. From 2019, this the matic is expanding one more time all over the world.

In 2021, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to one of the first explorers to have undertaken and succeeded in a world tour, Fernand de Magellan (1480-1521).

On the obverse of this coin is engraved the portrait of Fernando de Magellan, Portuguese navigator and explorer.

The Victoria sailing the seas and oceans is shown on the coin. It was the first ship to navigate the globe on its expedition to the Molucca Islands. This is expressed by the world map in the background, which also shows the route taken by Magellan and his crew. The parallels and meridians are also represented.

The "500 years" symbolize the tribute of his passing.

The face value is inscribed at the bottom center of the coin.

The reverse of the coin depicts the Convent of Christ in the city of Tomar in Portugal. More precisely, it shows the window of the central nave decorated with numerous motifs in the Manueline style, in particular "ropes" reminiscent of those used on ships during the era of the great discoveries.

The year 2021 and the different of Joaquin Jimenez are present at the bottom of the reverse.

The mention RF is in the upper right corner.

    Our craftman

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
