In 2021, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to one of the first explorers to have undertaken and succeeded in a world tour, Fernand de Magellan (1480-1521).
On the obverse of this coin is engraved the portrait of Fernando de Magellan, Portuguese navigator and explorer.
The Victoria sailing the seas and oceans is shown on the coin. It was the first ship to navigate the globe on its expedition to the Molucca Islands. The "500 years" symbolize the tribute of his passing.
The face value is inscribed at the bottom center of the coin.
The reverse of the coin depicts the Convent of Christ in the city of Tomar in Portugal. More precisely, it shows the window of the central nave decorated with numerous motifs in the Manueline style, in particular "ropes" reminiscent of those used on ships during the era of the great discoveries.
The year 2021 and the different of Joaquin Jimenez are present at the bottom of the reverse.
