In 2023, France will host its second Rugby World Cup, following on from 2007. To prepare for this major sporting event, Monnaie de Paris is unveiling the rest of its collection a few months before the start of the competition.

As a former player and rugby enthusiast, it was a pleasure for me to pay tribute to this sport, which has marked me with its fine values. I wanted to underline these values by highlighting their universality and their historical roots in this year which also marks the bicentenary of the "oval world".

Emblematic coins

After the 2022 collector's coins featuring the XV de France and the Rugby World Cup emblem, the next part of this collection is based on different coins. Gold and silver Euros and €2 coins depict a stylized rugby player with a ball in his hand. Under his feet, the field has been transformed into a globe. A starry sky and two oval planets in reference to the rugby ball surround the Earth as an allegory to the world of rugby. The test posts frame the design. Finally, 6 quarters are dedicated to some of Europe's great rugby nations, including France, England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. The sixth is dedicated to the competition's emblem.
