    Description

In 2023, France will host its second Rugby World Cup, following the 2007 tournament. This competition is the most prestigious rugby tournament in the world, and has been held every four years since 1987.  To prepare for this major sporting event, Monnaie de Paris, in collaboration with the Rugby World Cup 2023, has launched a series of collector coins celebrating the sport.

This series focuses on the international competition that will take place in France from September 8th to October 28th 2023. The tournament matches will take place in several cities in France, from Lille to Nice, Paris and Toulouse.

The obverse of the coin depicts a rugby player in action running with a ball. Behind him stands an iconic French monument and symbol of victory: the Arc de Triomphe. Underneath the arch, one can see the rugby posts, as if the arch were in the middle of a stadium. In the sky, an oval planet refers to the "rugby planet".

The reverse side shows the Webb Ellis Trophy, which the winner of the Rugby World Cup 2023 will have the pleasure of holding up. On the left of the cup is the inscription RF, and on the right the face value. The words "Rugby World Cup France 2023" appear all around the design. On the left of the cup, appears the logo of the Rugby World Cup France 2023.

    Our craftman

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
