    Description

    Celebrating US Independence History.

Starting in 2020, Monnaie de Paris will retrace the history of American Independence through a collection of coins.

The designs of the coins are directly inspired by historical products published by Monnaie de Paris: old medals from our archives. This sub-theme is part of the Great Dates of Humanity theme which began in 2019 with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the First Step on the Moon and the Dday.

In 2020, Monnaie de Paris started the series “History of US Independency" with the arrival of La Fayette in Boston. In 2022, Monnaie de Paris is paying a tribute to the Great Seal of the United States celebrating its 240th anniversary.

The face represents one of the most precise versions of the Great Seal: the rays of light «piercing the clouds», a bald eagle with outstretched wings holding an olive branch and thirteen arrows in the other, the ensemble symbolizes peace as well as defence through war. The bird is surmounted by thirteen stars recalling the thirteen original states. The eagle has its head turned towards the olive branch, to its right, to symbolize a preference for peace. The banner E Pluribus Unum («De plusieurs, un») recalls the reunion of the 13 states that originated in the United States.
The 13 original colonies are also recalled by the 13 stripes of the coat of arms, the 13 arrows, the 13 leaves and 13 olives of the olive branch as well as by the phrase "E Pluribus Unum" which contains 13 letters.
The hallmark and the 2022 yeardate are also visible.
This cut is in High Relief and the work of engraving is magnified by reverse polishing.

On the reverse, symbolised by an Indian princess (seated among bundles and an anchor), America holds a cornucopia and welcomes Mercury (aka Hermes, standing on the left wearing a cloak and a winged cap), the god of science and commerce in the United States.
In the background is a sailboat; and we can see the mention “TO PEACE AND COMMERCE”.
The date of the Independence of the United States is inscribed at the bottom: IV JUL MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776), in small letters below, C. BARBER 1876 (the artist who reproduced F.DUPRE’s work) as well as the name of the original artist, DUPRE F. below Mercury.

    Our craftman

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
