Description
In the year
leading up to the anniversary of the United States' independence, Monnaie de
Paris pays tribute to George Washington.
George
Washington, the first President of the United States, is one of the country's
founding fathers. He played a crucial role as commander-in-chief of the
Continental Army during the War of Independence between 1775 and 1783, and
helped lay the foundations of the young American republic. Washington had very
close links with France, particularly through his relationship with the Marquis
de Lafayette, to such an extent that he was granted honorary citizenship in
1792.
The face of
this coin features the bust of the statue of George Washington, based on a
statue sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon in 1792 and exhibited in the Virginia
State Capitol. In the background is the Betsy Ross flag, where each of the
thirteen stars represents a founding colony of the United States.
The reverse
is dedicated to the seal of the Continental Army, historically placed under the
command of George Washington in 1775. The coat of arms represents a snake
flying over a military trophy, made up of armour, crossed flags and weapons.
This composition refers to the military strength and resilience of the
Continental Army during the War of Independence.
Our craftman
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
