Founded in 1923 by Walt Disney, Disney Animation studio’s are celebrating 100 years of stories and magic. Historically established as “Disney Brothers Studios”, the American studio has produced more than 150 films and hundreds of animated shorts since its creation. The characters created by the studio's animators have crossed time and generations, continuing to amaze adults and children alike.
To celebrate the centenary of the Disney studios, Monnaie de Paris is paying tribute to Walt Disney's titanic legacy by minting a collection of coins featuring characters from his universe.
Mickey Mouse, the Disney Studios star, was designed in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks as a replacement for the character of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Inspired by both a house mouse that Walt Disney had adopted as a child and the cartoon characters of the time, Mickey made his first appearance that same year in the short film "Steamboat Willie" where he portrayed a sailor on a paddle steamer. Since that historic first appearance, Mickey Mouse has become Disney's iconic character, propelling the studio to international success.
The reverse of the coins in this collection feature the character of Mickey Mouse, along with a frieze of engraved characters from the Disney studio universe. This reverse also presents the face value of the coin and the acronym "RF" (French Republic).

Our craftman
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
