Description
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the appeal of 18 June 1940, the 130th anniversary of the birth of Charles de Gaulle and the 50th anniversary of his death, this coin commemorates one of the most influential French leaders in history.
The face of this coin represents Charles de Gaulle thanks to two engravings of his profile. These two engravings commemorate two important aspects of his life: his military and his political career. The Lorraine cross, representing the freedom and unification of France, also appears on the obverse of the coin. This cross was directly associated with General de Gaulle and was also erected at his memorial in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises.
This coin is available in two different cards. One pays homage to the personality of Charles de Gaulle, the other commemorates the 80th anniversary of the June 18 Appeal, viewed here.
Our craftman
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
