    Description

In 2021, Monnaie de Paris inaugurated a series focused on literary styles and authors who have marked literature history in France and abroad. After celebrating poetry in 2021, theatre in 2022 and adventure novels in 2024, Monnaie de Paris honours a science fiction author in 2025: Jules Verne, for the 120th anniversary of his passing.

On the front of this coin, featuring Jules Verne and his global work, the author plays the role of a magician, revealing all his inventions and imaginations from his top hat. References to From the Earth to the Moon, Around the Moon, Five weeks in a balloon, Around the World in Eighty Days, The Mysterious Island, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, and Journey to the Center of the Earth blend together to paint an overall picture of the Voyages extraordinaires. The author's name, dates and the yeardate can be found to the left of the portrait.

The reverse side is common to the entire Art of the Quill series. Several iconic quotations can be read, such as Voltaire’s “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien”, Dante Alighieri’s “Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch'intrate ”, William Shakespeare’s “To be or not to be: that is the question” or Nietzsche’s “Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich starker”. A feather is engraved in the center of the coin and underneath is the title of the series. The acronym RF appears in the lower part of the coin, along with the hallmark of Joaquin Jimenez and the engraving workshop.

    Our craftman

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
