For the release of its new albumin 2020, Monnaie de Paris is honouring the world of Morris through a complete collection of coins and medals. This series features illustrations by Achdé, drawer of the new albums of the saga.
The obverse of this coin features the cover of Lucky Luke's new album, "A Cowboy in High Cotton”. We find here the character of Morris and Bass Reeves, the second hero of this opus, in the middle of a cotton field.
The reverse of the coin represents one of the most emblematic cartoon boards of the Franco-Belgian comic strip. Here, Lucky-Luke fights a duel against his own shadow and proves once again that he is indeed the fastest shooter in the west. The "75 ans" mention under the character's name celebrates the birthday of the famous cowboy.
The Collection
Monnaie de Paris unveils a collection dedicated to the universe of Lucky Luke, celebrating in 2021 the 75th anniversary of the lone cowboy, a few months after the release of the new album of the series, A Cowboy in high cotton.
Translating comic book characters is an interesting but perilous exercise. The transition from comic strip to volume must faithfully transcribe the clear line of Morris and Achdé's work. These coins and medals are the faithful representation of a graphic line proper to the Franco-Belgian artist, it is a tribute in three dimensions paid by the craftsmen of Monnaie de Paris to the universe of Lucky Luke.

THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
