To celebrate the bicentenary of Napoleon death in 2021, Monnaie de Paris decided to highlight the painting by Jacques-Louis David, The coronation of Napoleon, for the beginning of this new series dedicated to the works of the Louvre.
The face of these coins is the representation of the coronation of Emperor Napoleon I and Empress Josephine on December 2, 1804. This famous painting by Jacques-Louis David are exhibited at the Louvre Museum since 1889.
On the reverse of the coins we find the Pyramid of the Louvre in the foreground in front of the building. Inside the pyramid, an unmissable work of the museum: the Winged Victory of Samothrace. The name of the museum is also inscribed at the bottom of the coin.
