Description
French's Mint Pessac factory was inaugurated on September 3, 1973. Heir to Le Corbusier's style, this manufacturing site was designed by the Atelier Salier-Courtois-Lajus-Fouquet, and represents a remarkable architectural and industrial monument. To mark the 50th anniversary of the factory's inauguration, Monnaie de Paris invites you to discover its hidden face...through a mini-medal packaged in a cardlet.
The design is a composition of different views of the PESSAC building, taken from archive photos. In the center, a hexagon symbolizes France, with the number "50" at its center. Discs evoking money blanks punctuate the design in an geometrical pattern.
The reverse of this medal is the traditional Monnaie de Paris reverse used on souvenir medals. The title "50 ans de PESSAC" and the anniversary dates "1973-2023" are added to the crown. To celebrate this historical event and make it an exclusive object, Monnaie de Paris decided to add a "U BLEAM" engraving to the medal, giving access to exclusive content on the history and secrets of the Pessac factory...
Our craftman
THE MEDAL MINTER
The medal minter transforms a blank into a medal, alternating between striking to bring out the relief and annealing to return the metal to a more malleable state. The blank is struck as many times as necessary, depending on the diameter, depth and detail of the engraving. Finally, surface treatments are applied to enhance the finished piece
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
