An irrefutable masterpiece of Gothic art, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris receives more than 13 million visitors a year from around the world. This extraordinary building, with foundations that date back to 1163, has been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 850th anniversary in 2013 has inspired Monnaie de Paris to honor the Cathedrale by its dedicating of a medal.

Following the fire, which occurred on April 15, which destroyed part of the historic monument, Monnaie de Paris mobilized to pay tribute by dedicating a medal.

The obverse represents the south facade of the cathedral. Tribute to the architecture of this famous monument. Inscribed are symbols of Gothic art: a gargoyle, the arch of the main entry and tympanum of Notre-Dame.

The reverse is the exact reproduction of the northern "rose", stained-glass window.

An engraving on the edge indicates: "Reconstruction deNotre-Dame de Paris, 15 avril 2019.

    Our craftman

    • THE MEDAL MINTER

The medal minter transforms a blank into a medal, alternating between striking to bring out the relief and annealing to return the metal to a more malleable state. The blank is struck as many times as necessary, depending on the diameter, depth and detail of the engraving. Finally, surface treatments are applied to enhance the finished piece

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
