    Description

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of its launch, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to the Erasmus programme with a €2 commemorative coin.

Joaquin Jimenez, won the competition organized by the European Commission. His design will be minted and will circulate in most of the euro area member states from July 2022.

The name of this programme is inspired by the humanist canon, philosopher and theologian Erasmus, who campaigned during his life for peace in Europe, in the hope of a more unified and inclusive Europe.

The programme was adopted in 1987 by the European Commission. It aims to facilitate the mobility of people wishing to study, do an internship or volunteer in one of the member states of the programme.

The design of the coin reveals the profile of Erasmus,  surrounded by beams, from the stars of the European flag that appear on the crown, projecting the number 35 in the center of the coin, in reference to the 35 years of the Erasmus programme. These links represent the many intellectual and human exchanges between European students.

This coin is available in a box.

    Our craftman

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
