    Description

Every year, the chinese calendar series presents a new animal. 2025 is the year of the serpent.

In Chinese culture, the snake is the most enigmatic animal of the zodiac.

Natives of the Snake sign are rather secretive and cautious. They are renowned for their wise and calm nature.

According to legend, during the race to select the animals of the zodiac, the cunning serpent secretly slipped onto the horse's hoof and took sixth place. This story reflects his strategic intelligence.

Surrounded by plum blossom, a popular symbol in Chinese history, art, and lanterns, the dragon’s depiction appeals to children. The inscription 'Year of the snake’ and the yeardate appear at the center of the coin. The ideogram of the snake appears below.

On the reverse side, all the animals of the Chinese zodiac are drawn in a cartoon-like way around the Ying and Yang symbol. A complete cycle of the Chinese zodiac will be composed from 2018 to 2029. Each of these twelve years features an animal from this calendar. The face value is visible in the center of the coin as well as the symbol "RF".

    The Collection

One of the oldest in the world, the chinese calendar is a sun-and-moon calendar. Months are set according to the moon, i.e. the first day of each month, is the new moon and the 15th day is the fuul moon. Because the solar year counts 12 lunar month plus a dozen of days, seven intercalary months are added over each 19 years, in order for the calendar year to stay within a solar year. Chinese astrology is based on a 12 years cycle, represented by twelve animals. In order appear the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and the Pig. Each animal is a symbol of characteristic personality traits of persons born during this sign.

Creating the Chinese calendar collection is always an exercise in mysticism. We have to pay tribute to the lunar calendar while at the same time bringing a French touch to it, creating this mixture of cultures. Added to this are the character traits linked to the signs, which we try to translate into a kind of anthropomorphism represented by the attitude we express through each animal!

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
