    Description

As the 250th anniversary of American independence approaches, the Franco‑American friendship stands out as one of the oldest and most defining diplomatic relationships in the Western world.

Forged during the War of Independence in the late 18th century, when France provided decisive military, naval, and financial support to the insurgents, this alliance gradually evolved into a lasting partnership built on shared political values. Over the centuries, the two nations have experienced pivotal moments of cooperation — from the Battle of Yorktown to the First and Second World Wars, and later within major international institutions. Today, this shared history continues to fuel an ongoing dialogue in the cultural, scientific, economic, and strategic fields.

In 2026, Monnaie de Paris celebrates this milestone anniversary in honor of the powerful and enduring Franco‑American friendship.

    The Collection

In 2026, Monnaie de Paris is presenting a reinterpretation of the Libertas Americana medal to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The figures depicted on this historic medal are portrayed against a backdrop of years of shared history, mutual exchange and evolution.

In this collection, today’s engraving workshop pays direct homage to its 18th-century counterparts! The real challenge lies in capturing the three-dimensional detail of antique medals and translating it onto contemporary coins – a true test of skill and a testament to our centuries-old expertise.

    Our craftman

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
