Description
The Tour de
France is the most famous cycling race in the world.
It was
first organised in 1903 by the newspaper L'Auto, with the aim of stimulating
the public and, above all, winning over its rival Le Vélo. Today, it is
the 3rd most watched sporting event in the world, after the Football World Cup
and the Olympic Games.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the finish on the
Champs-Elysées in style, Monnaie de Paris is unveiling a complete two-part
collection. The first part, in € gold and silver, will be available from 27
March 2025, 100 days before the Tour de France kicks off in Lille-Nord de
France. The collector coins and mini-medals will be available a few days before
the official start on 17 June 2025.
The Collection
The Tour de France is the world's most famous cycling race. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its arrival on the Champs-Elysées, Monnaie de Paris is unveiling two commemorative 10 euros and 50 euros coins, just 100 days before the start of the race in Lille-Nord de France.
This collection pays tribute to the Tour de France, a unifying sporting event. Every year, millions of spectators come together for three weeks to follow the exploits of incredible athletes and travel all over France. The fervour surrounding the Tour is testament to the place that this event has created for itself in the world.
Engraver word
Our craftman
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
