Description
Thomas Pesquet is the tenth French astronaut and the first among them to command the International Space Station (ISS). During his two missions in space, Proxima in 2016-2017 and Alpha in 2021, he shared his scientific adventure, his daily life in the Station and his pictures of our planet, particularly over social networks. He has made millions of people dream. His travels have also been a wake-up call; an occasion to cast a fresh eye on the Earth, its beauty and its fragility. Monnaie de Paris joins Thomas Pesquet in a call to take care of our planet. This collection invites you to follow the astronaut in weightlessness. It pays tribute to the space adventure that's always looking ahead to new horizons, but mostly to our Earth, beautiful but fragile.Thomas Pesquet is the tenth French astronaut and the first among them to command the International Space Station (ISS). On the obverse, the Earth is represented in the open palm of an astronaut. In the background is a sky full of
stars. This design gives the observer the impression of being inside the astronaut's helmet, who has
succeeded in grasping the planet to admire it. Along the edge of the coin are the words ‘12,756 km’ and ‘23h56’,
which represent the diameter of the Earth and the time taken for it to rotate.
On the reverse, the face value is surrounded by two branches, one of oak and the other of laurel, evoking the
Euro symbol. The entire motif on the reverse is framed by ‘République Française’ and a series of lines
representing the Hexagon.

The Collection
The Monnaie de Paris has teamed up with Thomas Pesquet for an exceptional collection. Join the astronaut on a space odyssey that will take you on a journey through our solar system. This collection offers a new perspective on Earth, its beauty and its fragility.
The inspiration for this collection came above all from my meeting with Thomas Pesquet. I was guided by his accounts of his space missions with the ESA and his passion for the universe. My mission was to convey his incredible human adventure, the magnificence of these planets, and the fragility of our beautiful Earth. Thomas would reassure Blaise Pascal: ‘The eternal silence of these infinite spaces... fills us with wonder.’
Engraver word
Our craftman
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
