The obverse features a sailor seen from behind, wearing a sailor’s jacket and a cap, an iconic figure of the French Navy. Surrounding him are ships and aircraft illustrating the diversity of the Navy’s missions.

“O free man, you shall always cherish the sea!” Baudelaire. It was a great honour for me to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the French Navy with these €2 coins. We sought to pay tribute to our sailors and our naval fleet in order to raise the profile of the French Navy on the international stage.
