The Summer Olympic games that will take place in Paris in 2024 are the opportunity, for Monnaie de Paris to celebrate this major international competition through a series celebrating Sport, its values and the athletes. Olympism and Paralympism will be highlighted on those products, struck in France in our art workshops.
In 2023, we are developing a collection of medallions representing the 26 letters of the Alphabet illustrated by 26 Olympic and Paralympic sports.
The roots of hockey run deep in antiquity. Historical evidence suggests that a crude form of the sport was played 4,000 years ago in Egypt. Modern hockey emerged in England in the mid-19th century. Speed, skill, fun! These are the main characteristics of hockey. It made its definitive entry into the Olympic programme in 1928 in Amsterdam and in 1980 for women.
