The Summer Olympic games that will take place in Paris in 2024 are the opportunity, for Monnaie de Paris to celebrate this major international competition through a series celebrating Sport, its values and the athletes. Olympism and Paralympism will be highlighted on those products, struck in France in our art workshops.
In 2023, we are developing a collection of medallions representing the 26 letters of the Alphabet illustrated by 26 Olympic and Paralympic sports.
Wheelchair fencing was on the programme of the first Paralympic Games in 1960, but originated in Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the aftermath of the Second World War as a form of rehabilitation and muscle strengthening. It is a mixed discipline which is practised in foil, epee and sabre in a wheelchair held securely in a special fixture.
