On the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to this renowned international competition with a collection in honor of the Olympic Torch.
The Torch of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games is much more than a simple object. It is a powerful symbol, which embodies the spirit of the Games by carrying the Olympic and Paralympic Flame, spreading a message of peace and unity.
The Torch, lit in Olympia according to tradition, will cross the Mediterranean Sea to arrive in Marseille, France, on May 8th 2024, marking the start of four months of festivities.
The design of the Torch reflects the values of Paris 2024, with a unique colour inspired by equality, water and appeasement. It hence becomes the central element of the celebrations, from the Olympic Torch Relay on May 8th 2024 to the closing of the Paralympic Games on September 8th 2024 . Created as an art object, the Torch represents the unique identity of Paris 2024, combining tradition and modernity, carrying the Olympic legacy while celebrating contemporary values.
This proof series celebrates the Olympic Torch Relay. Limited to just 2,024 copies, this set contains the 8 circulating denominations in proof quality. The obverse of the 50cts, 20cts and 10cts feature the new design by Joaquin Jiménez, Engraver General of Monnaie de Paris.
This set also contains the exclusive 20€ coin in proof quality depicting the Olympic Torch Relay, only available in this set.
On the oberverse, Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic, is depicted as if she were in motion holding the Olympic torch of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The flame dancing atop the torch symbolises the passionate spirit and determination of the athletes. In the background, an athletics track stretches out, a reminder of sport.
The reverse of the €20 coin shows the face value surrounded by two branches, one of oak, the other of laurel, which evoke the Euro symbol. The entire reverse design is framed by an assembly of lines representing the Hexagon.
