Description
On the
occasion of the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games taking place in France in
2024, Monnaie de Paris celebrates these major international competitions. It
honors Sport, its values, its athletes and the heritage of the host country.
Olympism and Paralympism are highlighted on those products, struck in France in
our art workshops.
This
paperweight pays tribute to the Games of yesterday and today. Its format is inspired by the medals struck
by Monnaie de Paris for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, associated with the
second Olympic Games (2nd Olympiad of the modern era).
The
engraving shows an ancient athlete throwing a discus, a tribute to the ancient
Games. Next to him, a modern runner wearing the emblem of the Paris 2024
Olympic Games on her jersey crosses a finish line. Niké, the goddess of
Victory, is seated on the Arc de Triomphe and crowns the victorious athlete
with laurels. In the background is a Parisian landscape. One can see the Eiffel
Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, as well as Haussmann buildings. A map of Paris
can also be seen in the background.
The Collection
Monnaie de Paris celebrates the Olympic and Paralympic Games with various innovative and new collections over several years, showcasing the sportsmen and the Olympic spirit. Collection coins, commemorative 2€, gold and silver Euro or medallions, these collections put the spotlight on the disciplines, places and icons of the Olympics.
Our craftman
THE MEDAL MINTER
The medal minter transforms a blank into a medal, alternating between striking to bring out the relief and annealing to return the metal to a more malleable state. The blank is struck as many times as necessary, depending on the diameter, depth and detail of the engraving. Finally, surface treatments are applied to enhance the finished piece
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
