On the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to this renowned international competition with a collection in honor of the Olympic Torch.

The Torch of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games is much more than a simple object. It is a powerful symbol, which embodies the spirit of the Games by carrying the Olympic and Paralympic Flame, spreading a message of peace and unity.

The Torch, lit in Olympia according to tradition, will cross the Mediterranean Sea to arrive in Marseille, France, on May 8th 2024, marking the start of four months of festivities.

The design of the Torch reflects the values of Paris 2024, with a unique colour inspired by equality, water and appeasement. It hence becomes the central element of the celebrations, from the Olympic Torch Relay on May 8th 2024 to the closing of the Paralympic Games on September 8th 2024 . Created as an art object, the Torch represents the unique identity of Paris 2024, combining tradition and modernity, carrying the Olympic legacy while celebrating contemporary values.

The torch is a powerful symbol of the Olympic Games. It marks the opening of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. To pay tribute to the torch, Monnaie de Paris wanted to take up the challenge of technical innovation for this collection. It has therefore developed its first coin with a iridescent effect.

The iridescent effect is a technical innovation consisting of a multitude of facets engraved in the tooling, which are then transferred to the coin when it is struck, creating a unique visual effect. When the coin is tilted, natural light is refracted through tiny incisions, producing an iridescent rainbow that accentuates the details of the design and adds a spectacular dimension of color to the coin.

The reverse common to the series since 2021, shows a view of Paris where the Seine looks like an athletics track. The Eiffel Tower dominates the city and illuminates the competition.

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
