Erected in the 12th century at the instigation of Bishop Maurice de Sully, Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral is a jewel of Gothic architecture that has dominated the Île de la Cité for over eight centuries. This architectural masterpiece, characterized by its slender buttresses and flamboyant rose windows, bears witness to the skills of medieval builders and has been the scene of many major historical events, such as the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Today, it remains a place of religious and intellectual pilgrimage, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world, making it the most visited monument in France and Europe.
This year, Monnaie de Paris is honoring the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris to the public by minting a commemorative €2 coin, engraving for all eternity the lines of this jewel of Gothic art.
The obverse of this coin features a full-scale depiction of the cathedral's west façade, with its rose window emerging between the two towers. The official Notre-Dame de Paris logo also appears against the listel.
Our craftman
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
