Description
In 2025,
Monnaie de Paris represents two inseparable portraits by Rembrandt, jointly
acquired in 2016 by the Louvre Museum and the Rijksmuseum, an opportunity to
bring them together on a single frame in honour of their return to the
galleries of the Parisian museum for the next five years.
Painted in
1634, these two
life-size portraits are among the great artworks of Rembrandt, one of the
masters of Dutch painting.They bear
witness to the union of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit. The two figures are
in dialogue: the young man, sure of himself and his place in the social
edifice, welcomes his wife, the heiress of one of the wealthy families of the
economic capital of the United Provinces, at the same time as he points her
out.
They are
the only known life-size portraits painted by Rembrandt, a style then reserved for the
highest European nobility; they probably reflect the couple's desire to assert
their social status. Although painted individually, the portraits were lucky to
have never been seperated since the 17th century. Under the agreement between
France and the Netherlands, they must always be exhibited together.
The Collection
Once the palace of kings, the Louvre has been at the heart of French history for eight centuries. Conceived from its creation in 1793 as a universal museum, its collections, among the finest in the world, span several millennia and a territory that stretches from America to the frontiers of Asia.
How do you pay tribute to Rembrandt? A tricky question, but did you know that he was also an engraver? That certainly strengthened our connection! The principle behind these coins was to recreate the original effects of light, both through engraving and polishing, and through appropriate printing. Seeing Rembrandt's work at the Coin Conference in Amsterdam was a decisive factor in our artistic choices for this collection.

THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
