Independence of the United States - 250 years

To mark the 250th anniversary of US independence, the Monnaie de Paris is unveiling several coin collections dedicated to the key symbols of this founding history. Inspired by the Libertas Americana medal, George Washington and the Marquis de La Fayette, they pay tribute to the shared heritage and enduring friendship between France and the United States.

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the United States, I wanted to continue the numismatic tradition that has existed between France and the United States since 1776. The creative intention was to depict these two ‘brothers’ in history in the style of a Franco-American playing card, featuring Washington on one side and La Fayette on the other – a real artistic gem!

Emblematic coins

These collections pay tribute to the historic ties that have united France and the United States since the birth of the American nation. On the Libertas Americana coins, Minerva and Lady Liberty come together around the flame of liberty, a symbol of the Franco-American alliance. The iconography of the original medal is reimagined in a contemporary design, enhanced by the motto ‘LIBERTAS POPULUSQUE UNIVERSALIS’ and the date 4 July 2026. The coins dedicated to La Fayette and George Washington feature these two founding figures on the obverse and reverse, set against the French and American flags, celebrating the enduring friendship between the two nations and the values they share.
