Since 2010, French Excellence series has combined the exceptional know-how of Comité Colbert brands or a French cultural institution with that of Monnaie de Paris to create a unique collection that combines their respective talents. Among the major houses to have collaborated with Monnaie de Paris are Cartier, Baccarat, Sèvres-Cité de la Céramique, Van Cleef & Arpels, Guy Savoy, Boucheron, the Louvre Museum, Berluti, Dior, Lacoste, Notre Dame and Lancôme in 2025.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Musée d’Orsay, Monnaie de Paris dedicates the exceptional talent of its artisans to the museum. Conceived by Monnaie de Paris, in close partnership with the Musée d’Orsay, the French Excellence 2026 collection masterfully embodies the harmonious fusion of their two worlds.
The Italian architect Gae Aulenti was chosen in 1981 to take part in the project to transform Orsay Station into a museum. Responsible for designing the interior layout, visitor circulation, and architectural language of the space, Gae Aulenti boldly blended the original structure with contemporary materials and the spatial arrangement of the collections. Her contribution to the museum’s visual and museographic identity has earned her a place among the greats in her field.
To celebrate the museum’s opening in 1986, Gae Aulenti designed a medal created especially for the occasion and struck by Monnaie de Paris.
Forty years later, Monnaie de Paris is reissuing this commemorative paperweight with the original tools. Rectangular in shape with rounded corners, the medal measures 62 × 60 mm and features engraved, pierced and red-accented graphic lines. The 2026 reissue differs from the original in its silver finish.

THE MEDAL MINTER
The medal minter transforms a blank into a medal, alternating between striking to bring out the relief and annealing to return the metal to a more malleable state. The blank is struck as many times as necessary, depending on the diameter, depth and detail of the engraving. Finally, surface treatments are applied to enhance the finished piece
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
