Description
The FIFA
World Cup is an international football competition held every four years.
It gathers
the best football teams of the planet to name a winner, under the cheers of
spectators from all over the world. Today, football has established itself as
the world's most popular sport. Conquering entire nations, the sport has no
fewer than two hundred million licensed players around the world.
For the
2026 FIFA World Cup, Monnaie de Paris launches a collection paying tribute to
football and the localization of the competition.
On the
obverse, we can see a football player in the foreground, with his back to us,
kicking a ball. He is about to shoot into a backdrop of emblematic buildings
from the three host countries of the FIFA 26 World Cup: Canada, Mexico and the
United States. To his left, the CN Tower and Rogers Centre Stadium from
Toronto, two elements of the Canadian skyline. Chichén Itza, one of the New
Seven Wonders of the World, located in Yucatán, Mexico, stands in the centre.
Finally, to the player’s right, we can see New York's famous Statue of Liberty.
The official inscription ‘FIFA WORLD CUP 26’ and the word ‘FOOTBALL’ complete
the design.
On the
reverse, the official trophy is in the centre, in front of the official slogan
‘WE ARE 26’. The face value and the hallmarks are on the left, the initials of
the French Republic on the right and the yeardate is at the bottom, all in
front of the official look of this FIFA World Cup.
The Collection
For the first time since its creation, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held in three different countries: Canada, the United States and Mexico. It is also the first time that the tournament will be played with 48 teams instead of 32. One year ahead of the competition, Monnaie de Paris is offering a collection inspired by this global event.
Our craftman
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
