Scrooge McDuck dives into his vault. The Dalton brothers rob a bank. Tintin chases after a treasure that may not even exist. Largo Winch inhertits an empire. Gaston Lagaffe declares war on parking meters. Comics have always told stories about money through their most iconic characters.

From April 10 to September 6, 2026, the Monnaie de Paris is dedicating a major exhibition to this fascinating, funny, and sometimes explosive relationship with  CLING ! La bande dessinée parle cashFrom gold rushes to the invisible global financial system of today, from gold bars to counterfeit money, comics act as a mirror of our societies, constantly oscillating between social critique and popular success.

Bringing together over 250 works from public and private collections, the exhibition offers a playful and cross-genre exploration of comics, from early American newspaper strips to manga, including Franco-Belgian comics and American comics.

CLING ! is curated by Lucas Hureau and Damien MacDonald. The Monnaie de Paris, the exhibition's organizer, has entrusted executive production to the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image (CIBDI).

Themes & archetypes

The exhibition centers on major figures - heroes and antiheroes familiar to the general public - who have shaped the history of the ninth art :

  • Adventurers, from treasure hunts to gold rushes
  • Thieves, comical or menacing figures, from the Daltons to the Beagle Boys
  • Gamblers, caught between chance, cheating, and fate
  • Savers, from children's piggy bank to safes
  • Billionaires, fascinating and ambiguous, from Scrooge McDuck to Largo Winch
  • Outcasts, masters of resourcefulness and anti-establishment
  • Counterfeiters, coin forgers and masters of illusion
  • Alchemists, for whom true wealth lies in the imagination

Each archetype was the subject of a special commission from eight contemporary authors: Ugo Bienvenu, Blutch, Coco, Nicolas de Crécy, Florence Cestac, Anouk Ricard, Thomas Ott and Catherine Meurisse.

Visitors will encounte Tintin, Astérix, Lucky Luke, Scrooge McDuck, Batman, the Smurfs, Gaston Lagaffe, as well as the Freak Brothers, Lupin III, Blueberry, Corto Maltese, and major figures from manga and "underground" comics.

La Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image (CIBDI) in Angoulême preserves and showcases the largest collection of  original artwork and printed comics in Europe. Each year, the CIBDI produces around ten exhibitions, including co-productions with national and international partners. Its experience and  expertise in conservation, research, and exhibition production make it a key player in the heritage and contemporary  creation of the 9th art. As the executive producer of the CLING! exhibition, the CIBDI oversees its organization as well as its scientific and artistic coordination, in line with its cultural and heritage missions.
