    Description

Astrology is a discipline that attracts a wide audience thanks to its playful and accessible nature. It touches everyone in an intimate way and creates a sense of belonging by focusing on personality traits. Moreover, its aesthetic symbolism offers rich visual elements that can be an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists. Astrological signs appear to be an obvious theme to explore for Monnaie de Paris, which therefore affirms its desire to appeal to as many people as possible, while allowing the talents of its craftsmen to express themselves.

The wheel of the zodiac signs is engraved on the coin's gold-colored crown. One sign stands out from the rest, as it is larger than the others and has a sandblasted background, different from the smoother one of the others. It is the symbol of Aries. Part of the wheel is hidden by flames, a reminder of the element of the Aries sign, fire. The bust of a ram with majestic horns and a serene air occupies most of the central space on the obverse of the coin. The background features a starry sky in which the Aries constellation is outlined.

    The Collection

Millenia old, astrology has evolved over the centuries as this collection will over the years. It will be reissued for several year dates, to live on in our permanent collection. The Astros collection coins of Monnaie de Paris will be engraved every year, to delight both initiates and novices looking for an object that matches their personality.

The theme of astrology was an immediate inspiration for the engraving workshop. It allows a great creative freedom, and we enjoyed imagining, one by one, the representations of the 12 zodiac signs. The universe we invented for this collection is both graphically and symbolically rich. It seems to me that it is the perfect interpretation of the encounter between this popular theme and the know-how of Monnaie de Paris.

    Our craftman

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
