    Description

Born in 1890, Agatha Christie is one of the world's most widely read authors and remains an iconic figure in crime fiction.

Renowned for the subtlety of her plots, the richness of her characters and the extreme care she took with details, Agatha Christie captivated millions of readers with her art of twists and turns, red herrings and cleverly concealed clues.

Agatha Christie is still recognized today as the ‘Queen of Crime’, her works continuing to inspire literature, theatre and cinema. In 2026, 50 years after her passing, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to Agatha Christie’s incredible legacy.

On the obverse of this coin, a steam-powered river cruise boat – after the one that inspired Agatha Christie's novel and where she began writing it – sails down the Nile. The Nile is recognisable from the surrounding scenery: palm trees and majestic pyramids in the background. In the water, the name of the novel Death on the Nile ripples amid the wake caused by the navigation of the boat. On one of the pyramids, the face of Hercule Poirot is evoked by his iconic moustache and an Egyptian eye that lends an air of mystery to the scene, as if the detective were watching intently to uncover the secrets hidden by the passengers of the boat.

The reverse side is common to the entire Art of the Quill series. Several iconic quotations can be read, such as Voltaire’s “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien”, Dante Alighieri’s “Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch'intrate ”, William Shakespeare’s “To be or not to be: that is the question” or Nietzsche’s “Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich starker”. A feather is engraved in the center of the coin and underneath is the title of the series. The acronym RF appears in the lower part of the coin, along with the hallmark of Joaquin Jimenez and the engraving workshop.

    Our craftman

    • THE ENGRAVER

Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.

    • THE MINTER

The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
