Born in 1890, Agatha Christie is one of the world's most widely read authors and remains an iconic figure in crime fiction.
Renowned for the subtlety of her plots, the richness of her characters and the extreme care she took with details, Agatha Christie captivated millions of readers with her art of twists and turns, red herrings and cleverly concealed clues. Agatha Christie is still recognized today as the ‘Queen of Crime’, her works continuing to inspire literature, theatre and cinema.
In 2026, 50 years after her passing, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to Agatha Christie’s incredible legacy.
The obverse of this coin features Agatha Christie surrounded by references to her iconic works. Her posture, chin resting on her hand and eyes pensive, evokes a writer deep in thought. The index and middle fingers of the hand on which her head rests are raised in a position that reminds of a revolver. She holds a fountain pen between these two fingers. The queen of crime is thus depicted as the embodiment of her universe, ready to draw her pen and put a new subtle plot down on paper. Around her, one can recognise references to the novels And Then There Were None – a house on an island surrounded by ten silhouettes and a gramophone – The Murder of Roger Ackroyd – an English manor house, a watch and a dagger – Murder on the Orient Express – the Orient Express – and Death on the Nile – a river cruise boat in front of the pyramids. The author's name, dates and year are inscribed around her.
The reverse side is common to the entire Art of the Quill series. Several iconic quotations can be read, such as Voltaire’s “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien”, Dante Alighieri’s “Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch'intrate ”, William Shakespeare’s “To be or not to be: that is the question” or Nietzsche’s “Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich starker”. A feather is engraved in the center of the coin and underneath is the title of the series. The acronym RF appears in the lower part of the coin, along with the hallmark of Joaquin Jimenez and the engraving workshop.
Our craftman
THE ENGRAVER
Trained at the best schools, they have the years of experience behind them necessary to master all aspects of the craft. Using industrial oil-based modelling clay and working from a design executed freehand or with CAD software, they skilfully fashion a low relief model in order to enhance the engraving and the way it catches the light. They work alternately with concave and convex plaster moulds until satisfied they have achieved the best 3D rendering of the design.
THE MINTER
The first minters began to ply their trade in France when striking with a hammer appeared in the 4th century BC. Nowdays, minsters use press instead of a hammer. Their knowledge of dies, engraving and metals, and their expertise - passed seamlessly down from one generation to the next for centuries - guarantees the excellence of their work.
